Art and Celebrities

Many celebrities appreciate art and as an artist you may desire to use them as your muse. Some benefits are that they are well known and they have a large following therefore people can easily recognize the art and you can gain some exposure.

I happened to meet @mannymua in New York at Sephora on 34th street doing a Yves Saint Laurent promo for their beauty line.

As an artist you have to decide whether you will give the art away or keep it. He asked for it so I gave it to him. The choice is yours. It took me about 30minutes to complete the painting.

Other celebrities I have painted were Jessica White , a supermodel, in which she retweeted. If you can’t meet any celebrities you can use social media to reach out to them.

Impressionism vs Abstract Art

Impressionism is a form of art that is represented by think brushstrokes usually en plein air and also shows movement. Abstract art is shapes usually different from reality.

They are very different forms of art. I would say Im more of an impressionist.

These are two painting I did in oil, the first is a portrait and the second is a still life. You can notice the lights and movement in the brush strokes.

What kind of artist are you?

Painting NYC

In NYC there are a million things to paint. Subways, people, beaches, and more. Decide if you want to paint live or from photography or a mixture of the two.

You can plan a day at the beach and bring your supplies. And paint the waves. The summer time is beautiful. In fact, that what my next painting will be, so check out my new posts.

This is a painting I did this week, check out my post Impressionism vs abstract art. Here

Painting your Ideas

Some artists like to paint to be inspired others are inspired to paint. I am a little bit of both. If you have an idea you can either get a sketch book and sketch your ideas with pencil , pen, or marker or you can go straight to paint.

Sometimes you may not have an idea and that’s why some artist create few great works. However, you can look at art in museums to get ideas or paint according to what’s going on in society like a movement.

Doing a bit of research will help gather ideas. For example I’m from New York and I love the rain, I painted this piece today.

This is what I had in my mind. Do any images come to your mind that you would like to share?

Using Soft pastels as a medium

Soft Pastels are a great artist choice for large or small pieces. I have used soft and oil padtels and the difference is that you need to use a fixative for oil pastels. Soft pastels are great because they show strong vibrant colors and are easy to use.

I have used pastels to make beautiful ACEO collectible trading cards and I protect them using acid free sleeves. Another way to ensure the color stays vibrant is to show them behind glass making sure its no acrylic or plastic or the pastel particles will attract to it and make a ghost image. Hairspray can be used also if you are careful, hairspray tends to leave drops or alter the color of it. The best fixative if needed would be the Lascaux fine art fixativ.

I have my ACEO card auction in my ebay store.

Soft Pastels are a good medium for beginner or professional artist, you hold it right in between your fingers and you can feel the picture come to life as you use them.

Help! How should you price your art

Pricing art is often the problem when deciding how to sell work at the right price . The right price will be above what you feel comfortable with if you feel that the price is low then it probably is and you should charge more if you don’t feel like you’re overcharging a little bit then you’re probably undercharging.
A nice system to use ,there are two , one is you use the measurements of the painting for example a 9×12 painting you would add 9+12 and then you have the multiplying factor to have it final price so if you’re multiplying factor is 2 then it will be 9+12×2 =42

The other way is to instead multiply the measurements for example 9×12 and then you will multiply it by your multiplying factor so if you’re multiplying factor is 2 will be 9×12×2=216

You see there is a big difference between the two so for very small pieces it makes sense to use one method it depends on how much you were trying to make if you’re a full-time artist you need to charge enough to make a living.
Consistency is the key buyers will not buy if they feel confused about your pricing people buy more when they can understand what they’re paying for, so be consitent. Read the rest of this entry
