Creating an Art Series

Many artist create hundreds of totally random works of art but others choose to create a series of work.

(Definition) Series: a number of usually similar things done, produced etc one after another.

For example an artist might create a series of Dogs, instead of dogs, cats, and elephants. That way the work can be specific and more in depth, the series can get even more focused to a specific breed of dog and dog color. This helps artists to explore different ideas on one topic, and relate to their audience. An audience is more likely to follow you if they can understand where your art is coming from, instead of just a pile of work that is all over the place.

How I Work

I like to start working in the morning after I had a nice glass of orange juice, The best time for me in in the daylight and whats wierd is that unlike most artists I dont start drawing immediately, I brainstorm and get a few ideas of what I want to create, locate reference images and then go to the canvas. I dont usually sketch out what Im going to do instead I pencil in on the canvas my draft and then once Im satisfied I will then begin painting, I spend from 3 hours to days or weeks even months or years on some paintings. You got to work to be a successful artist so I paint frequently depending on my schedule.

I always pay attention to detail, as you can see below in my bouquet, i start with a underlayer after my initial drawing and then I so an overlay of brighter hues, and the final layer looks like what you see below. Working with different techniques, you might of heard of wet on wet or wet on dry methods, I like to use for oil paints, the wet on dry method. What that means is the canvas is completly dry when I start painting, however I do stain my canvas with a sepia color when I use oils.  When I work with watercolor I move between the two methods depeneding on my mood and the object of the painting, for example if Im painting a body of water i will do a wet on wet to give it a more watery feel.

I can paint so long that I forget the time and I have to remember to get up and stretch , I also listen to music while I work, preferably classical, and when Im done my ritual is to clean my brushes and put away my paints, I work in my studio or living room , wherever I am feeling at the moment. If you paint how do you work? I would love to hear your comments or questions.
