Some artists like to paint to be inspired others are inspired to paint. I am a little bit of both. If you have an idea you can either get a sketch book and sketch your ideas with pencil , pen, or marker or you can go straight to paint.
Sometimes you may not have an idea and that’s why some artist create few great works. However, you can look at art in museums to get ideas or paint according to what’s going on in society like a movement.
Doing a bit of research will help gather ideas. For example I’m from New York and I love the rain, I painted this piece today.
When you use watercolor it is less messy than Acrylic or Oil paint. The simplicity makes it great for faster painting time. The effect is also different as the paint and water gives a wet look. It also takes more layers to achieve darker hues or less water.
It is great to use water color when you have an idea you want to quickly get on paper. The flow of the paint is very smooth and allows you to create endless images.
This image too me about 10 minutes. I used a brown color first then worked from light to dark. I also worked on the background after the foreground, I used a medium brush and I also used black, red, green, and blue.
In order to start an Art business you need a business plan. Copyrighting is also very important to own your own images. You can write your own business plan outlining finances and strategies. You should also start a search for manufacturers that will be able to produce your work and that fits into your plan.
I am starting a greeting card business. There will be cards for each season. The photo above is Christmas themed image.
The artist is able to run the entire business on their own. If you are just beginning it is best to start with creating your images. When I start my images I usually have an idea and I start painting an outline, do not be afraid to repaint over your work until you get it right.
I spent 2 days working on these images for a total of 3 hours and it is still a work in progress. It is a large piece however you may find new ideas while you are working so be patient.
Pencil drawings are just as detailed as a painting. Opting for just the graphite allows you to use different tones to show color indication and depth in your picture.
Find which technique you like to work with:
- Shading with smudging is a great way to move the pencil marks around your pictures leaving smooth light marks.
- Cross hatching makes for an interesting look and feel that can be combined with smudging.
- Dots with a pencil is also great and can be combined with any of the techniques.
You can choose one technique or all.
If you have an art show or just would like to promote your art you should have business cards. They are a great way to let a customer who does not want to buy your leave your show without feeling bad. You can have it in front of your art table for people to take or in the back for more serious buyers who will ask for one. Many artist overlook the business cards but it is very necessary especially if you have a online presence and you want people to find your website.
Sometimes you can draw in a sketchbook. When I draw in my sketchbook I use pastels , color pencils or even pen. It’s a good way to do studies on forms and figured. Sometimes I will do multiple studies on a certain part of the body such as the eyes , the lips , or the entire face. You can use a reference photo as well so that way you can get used to drawing things how they are in reality.
My sketch book is 9″x6″ so it’s not large, you can get any size, the smaller it is, the easier you can tote it around wherever you go, but for large projects you can use the big one, like my 18″x 24″.
You can find reference photos on the web in a book or you can ask a friend or family to sit for you, I used reference photos.
I usually take about 10-30 minutes or longer to study and draw the image. You can keep them in your sketchbook to refer back to them at a later time or to show your progression. The more you practice the better you will become, that is the same for beginner and advanced artists. Using different mediums give your drawings a different look and give you more variety in your sketchbook. I have used pencils, pastels, and pen. They all give you a different technique, so expanding your tools will help you create beautiful various peices.

Many artist create hundreds of totally random works of art but others choose to create a series of work.
(Definition) Series: a number of usually similar things done, produced etc one after another.
For example an artist might create a series of Dogs, instead of dogs, cats, and elephants. That way the work can be specific and more in depth, the series can get even more focused to a specific breed of dog and dog color. This helps artists to explore different ideas on one topic, and relate to their audience. An audience is more likely to follow you if they can understand where your art is coming from, instead of just a pile of work that is all over the place.
