Art and Celebrities

Many celebrities appreciate art and as an artist you may desire to use them as your muse. Some benefits are that they are well known and they have a large following therefore people can easily recognize the art and you can gain some exposure.

I happened to meet @mannymua in New York at Sephora on 34th street doing a Yves Saint Laurent promo for their beauty line.

As an artist you have to decide whether you will give the art away or keep it. He asked for it so I gave it to him. The choice is yours. It took me about 30minutes to complete the painting.

Other celebrities I have painted were Jessica White , a supermodel, in which she retweeted. If you can’t meet any celebrities you can use social media to reach out to them.

Impressionism vs Abstract Art

Impressionism is a form of art that is represented by think brushstrokes usually en plein air and also shows movement. Abstract art is shapes usually different from reality.

They are very different forms of art. I would say Im more of an impressionist.

These are two painting I did in oil, the first is a portrait and the second is a still life. You can notice the lights and movement in the brush strokes.

What kind of artist are you?

Having an Art Muse

An art muse is a character that you paint or shows up in different artworks you create. They can be inspirational and fun and cute.

My art muse is this boy who is recognized in 3 of my paintings thus far. Having a muse may make finding new painting ideas easier.

In this piece he is reading a newspaper. He is on a NYC subway car.

Whatever your muse is you can have fun with it. Do you have a muse and what is it?

Painting NYC

In NYC there are a million things to paint. Subways, people, beaches, and more. Decide if you want to paint live or from photography or a mixture of the two.

You can plan a day at the beach and bring your supplies. And paint the waves. The summer time is beautiful. In fact, that what my next painting will be, so check out my new posts.

This is a painting I did this week, check out my post Impressionism vs abstract art. Here

Painting your Ideas

Some artists like to paint to be inspired others are inspired to paint. I am a little bit of both. If you have an idea you can either get a sketch book and sketch your ideas with pencil , pen, or marker or you can go straight to paint.

Sometimes you may not have an idea and that’s why some artist create few great works. However, you can look at art in museums to get ideas or paint according to what’s going on in society like a movement.

Doing a bit of research will help gather ideas. For example I’m from New York and I love the rain, I painted this piece today.

This is what I had in my mind. Do any images come to your mind that you would like to share?

Painting in Watercoulour

When you use watercolor it is less messy than Acrylic or Oil paint. The simplicity makes it great for faster painting time. The effect is also different as the paint and water gives a wet look. It also takes more layers to achieve darker hues or less water.

It is great to use water color when you have an idea you want to quickly get on paper. The flow of the paint is very smooth and allows you to create endless images.

This image too me about 10 minutes. I used a brown color first then worked from light to dark. I also worked on the background after the foreground, I used a medium brush and I also used black, red, green, and blue.

Starting an Art Business

In order to start an Art business you need a business plan. Copyrighting is also very important to own your own images. You can write your own business plan outlining finances and strategies. You should also start a search for manufacturers that will be able to produce your work and that fits into your plan.

I am starting a greeting card business. There will be cards for each season. The photo above is Christmas themed image.

The artist is able to run the entire business on their own. If you are just beginning it is best to start with creating your images. When I start my images I usually have an idea and I start painting an outline, do not be afraid to repaint over your work until you get it right.

I spent 2 days working on these images for a total of 3 hours and it is still a work in progress. It is a large piece however you may find new ideas while you are working so be patient.

Drawing with pencil

Pencil drawings are just as detailed as a painting. Opting for just the graphite allows you to use different tones to show color indication and depth in your picture.

Find which technique you like to work with:

  • Shading with smudging is a great way to move the pencil marks around your pictures leaving smooth light marks.
  • Cross hatching makes for an interesting look and feel that can be combined with smudging.
  • Dots with a pencil is also great and can be combined with any of the techniques.

You can choose one technique or all.

Having an Art Show

when you want to have an art so make sure you prepare a couple weeks or months before because you don’t want to be rushing the day of the show. To begin you should have a list of your artwork that you plan to put in your show.

Having them labeled or make it easier for you to keep track of what you sold and see how much you made. You can have 5 or 500 pieces shown if you have the space make sure you set up a couple hours before the show before people get there.

It’s helpful to wear a name badge because many customers look to ask the artist questions especially if you’re with other people in the booth it’s hard for them to know who the artist is unless you have a photo.

You can display art and art bins are panels tables which ever is best for your type of art. To make my art panels I bought two screen doors from Home Depot and some felts I’ll see you staplegun and pliers. Then I also bought fabric cloth and stapled it to the screen door afterwards I put the felt on top and they came out great.

If you going to do a lot of art shows make sure you also have transportation to carry all your materials so your art show will be successful.

Business Cards

If you have an art show or just would like to promote your art you should have business cards. They are a great way to let a customer who does not want to buy your leave your show without feeling bad. You can have it in front of your art table for people to take or in the back for more serious buyers who will ask for one. Many artist overlook the business cards but it is very necessary especially if you have a online presence and you want people to find your website.
